Woodworking videos

I like to watch woodworking videos. I sometimes lie to myself and say I like woodwork. Yes, I do own a Veritas low angle jack plane, and yes, I ogle Lie Nielsen chisels, and no, I haven’t built more than one thing of substance from wood. I like woodwork when it’s going really well. And then you get some tear out on a board you just spent an hour dimensioning and flattening by hand. So I don’t know if I really like woodwork, but it does hold an appeal to me. Tools are nice.

But even if I’m not good at woodwork, and if I’ll never be good (still holding out for a retirement comeback), I like woodwork videos. Kobeomsuk is a particular favourite. It’s a Korean workshop. They make beautiful furniture, and film it well.

Where are the same videos for code? I want to write artisanal, beautifully crafted code. Code that is simple, with clean lines and sleek elegance, and attention to detail and perfect functionality. I want to make software tools that give people the same feeling as a really great piece of furniture. The kind of object that is unexpectedly heavy, in a reassuring way. A drawer that glides closed smoothly and evenly, with a satisfying tactile click at the end.
