RC Day 24 - Elm

Maybe half brain power today. Lingering cold plus some other distractions.

  • Did my Exec Prog.
  • I had a preliminary jobs chat, and now I’m thinking about jobs and have kinda bummed myself out. I am not 100% sure I want to go to a regular job as an employee post-RC. There are other options (contracting, founding, indie hacking until I’m broke, or some combination). I think I am career pivoting from being a senior machine learning/data science person to being some sort of tools or interactive-thing developer. The “think” in that sentence is because it is hard to write with authority about the destination of a pivot while mid-swerve, so to speak. Moving closer to the human-software interface is entirely consistent with my career arc (and I should write up that narrative as a blog post), but all The Forces Of Tech are against such things. The Forces want you to be a Data Scientist™️ or a Front-End Developer™️ or whatever, and stay that way. That is bad because all the most interesting things, to my mind, are intersectional, or happen at the interfaces of disciplines. Alas, it is much easier to present as A Known Thing than as a loosely held collection of values and skills. Maybe it’s time for my regularly scheduled rewatch of Inventing on Principle to affirm my belief in the road less travelled.
  • I spent most my programming time today working through the Elm Guide after Elm came up in the Svelte event I hosted yesterday. Thinking about building a small game in it.
  • Also attended Haskell Hangout.

I gave up on my stated intention to build a small Svelte thing every day this week almost immediately. It’s been a sort of disrupted week, so I’m ok with that, but I would like to finish up something tomorrow.
