Day 3 activities.
- Execute Program.
- Fighting with Fedex UK’s completely labyrinthine website to have my old company laptop collected.
- Made a thing! Time-Anxiety-as-a-Service. I got caught up with some opaque errors, went deep into a SvelteKit and MDSvex rabbit hole, then realized I was being a dummy.
- Learned about hosting events. RC is extremely Recurser-run.
- Paired to solve Advent of Code 2021 day 2 in Rust.
- Listened to three awesome non-tech talks from Recursers: career strategy, putting 90s tech in a 70s car, and (mostly) ublock.
We also had an introductions and advice session, where we (re-)met our batchlings and more folks from the batch that started before this. The elder Recursers shared some wisdom:
- Don’t be precious about your time. Being generous with it allows you to do more: you’re more likely to be unblocked quickly if you pair, for instance.
- There is no fixed schedule here. No one will tell you what to do. Observe yourself in this state and experiment with how you spend your time.
- Ask for help and put yourself out there.
- Try to work with people on whatever they are working on, even if you don’t know a lot about what they’re working on.
- Try to do things that scare you. A good signal you are at the edge of your abilities is not being sure you’ll succeed.
- Keep a few projects active - some easy and some hard.
- Sign up to present your work as a means of generating accountability.
- Reaching out to people is a good thing.
- Start things to figure out if you like them.
- Figure your schedule out.
